1801 $10 Capped Bust Heraldic Eagle PCGS AU53. Really as nice an example of an Early $10 you can find in About Uncirculated condition for under $20,000. Created in 1801 with an original mintage of 44,344, experts estimate that no more than 850 coins could remain today in all conditions. PCGS has already seen and certified 517 as of this writing and that includes thirty-years worth of resubmissions. In the AU grade, PCGS has recorded 224 coins which includes 35 in this grade of AU53. The Price Guide has a published value of $19,000 and Coin Values shows $20,000 in AU50 and $23,500 in AU55 (AU53 non-published).
We’ve spent some time comparing this specimen with other coins in the same grade class and find it to be above-average and certainly on-par with the example Stacks sold in March of 2011 for $19,550. This coin is distinguished by two parallel adjustment marks (as mint made) on the obverse and a small pocket of grease that must have been on the die at the time of striking enough to mask one of the upper obverse stars.
