1839-C $5 Liberty Half Eagle NGC XF40. A one-year Type coin!
This issue only had one set of dies to create an original mintage of 17,205 coins. Interestingly, the 1839 Charlotte and Dahlonega mint gold are the only years where the mintmark appears on the obverse. This makes it a one-year Type coin and required by all advanced Type set collectors. In addition, the 1839 is the sole year for the First Head design of the long-lived Liberty series, which makes the 1839-C the only Charlotte issue for the subtype. Although the differences from the 1840 are subtle, the bust truncation is more pronounced, and Liberty possesses a sleepy, less alert expression.
