1849 $10 Liberty No Motto NGC AU55 CAC. Although a total of 653,618 gold eagles were struck at the Philadelphia mint in 1849, they weren’t nearly saved as much as some of the other “P” mint dates. NGC has seen and certified a total of 1,106 in all grades as of the date of this publication, with a mere 228 in this grade of Choice AU. The added “insurance” of the CAC endorsement makes this an especially desirable addition to any U.S. Gold Type Advanced Set, including the No Motto denominations.
The present example displays a richer orange gold, close to that of the territorial gold coins being minted privately in the San Francisco area in the early days of the gold rush. Could this eagle be struck from Gold Rush nuggets from in and around Sutter’s Mill in northern California? We imagine it’s entirely possible…
