1849 $5 Moffat & Company, PCGS Fine-15 – SOLD

1849 $5 Moffat & Company, PCGS Fine-15. K-4, Rarity-5. The Moffat coins and ingots were among the first money coined after the discovery of gold in California just a few months previous. This piece is well-circulated and shows heavy wear on the obverse device of Liberty, an area that is usually weakly struck in the best of circumstances. Numerous small abrasions are peppered over each side of this green-gold piece that has light reddish accents over the devices.

The present example was last offered in a 2011 Heritage September Long Beach sale as lot number 4568. Due it’s relatively low value and documented ties back to the early days of our nations California Gold Rush, coins like these are collected by nearly all market participants.
