1857-S $20 Liberty Type 1 Double Eagle PCGS MS65. Variety 20A, Spiked Shield. Ex: S.S. Central America. SSCA 0452. One of the first groups of treasure brought up by the Discovery Group based upon the low serial number. The present specimen displays pale golden- yellow fields with one or two minor orangish areas, especially on the obverse. The obverse is Gem Brilliant Uncirculated with a few tiny contact “tics” on the neck and nearby fields. The reverse appears darn near perfect as we cannot discern any imperfection. To be overly critical, there appears to be a slight break in the luster just to the left of the eagle’s left outstretched wing. Another outstanding Type One twenty from the Central America treasure and sure to be in hot demand as the second recovery effort is re-introduced to the general public.
