1863-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle PCGS MS62 CAC. It’s entirely possible this may be one of those rescued from the S.S. Republic or S.S. Brother Jonathan shipwrecks, but the surfaces do not show the typical pebbled texture of a gold coin submerged in saltwater over an extended period of time. This piece displays lovely yellow-gold toning on the obverse and coral-orange patina over most of the reverse with just a few ticks from the Choice Mint State-63 grade level. PCGS population: 14 in 62, 6 in 63 and 2 in 64.
At auction CAC graded gold coins will nearly always bring a price equivalent to the Collectors Universe published price guide. In this case it’s $22,500. Numismedia retail is over $25,000.
