1865-S $2.50 Liberty NGC AU58. A thorough evaluation of auction data allows us to come to the conclusion the vast majority of known examples of this scarce date grade VF or less. The 1865 date is associated by most collectors with the Civil War and as such, all coins with this date enjoy great demand. NGC shows a population of 16 in AU58 and a mere four (4) in Mint State for the quarter eagle. The published NGC price was $3,200 up until August of this year, but it dropped to $2,800, offering buyers a better deal.
