1884-CC $20 Liberty Type 3 PCGS XF45. This piece rivals many of the AU55 graded examples that cross the auction block from time to time. While the luster is not as deep as you would see on a low-grade Mint State coin, it’s hard to to see this coin is a real cut above the rest – without the associated price tag. A few obverse contact marks are present, but are fewer than typically seen on 1884-CC, which often comes heavily nicked and marked. The end result is a distinctly above average example of this popular date and mint. Only 81,139 double eagles were coined at the Carson City Mint in 1884 (equal to $1,622,780 in face value). Many of these were shipped overseas for payments that required gold and now brought back to the United States available for placement within a private collection. Acquired by us in Monaco.
