1892 $5 Liberty PCGS PR64 Deep Cameo – SOLD

Description

1892 $5 Liberty with Motto PCGS Proof-64 Deep Cameo. Wow, what a “headlight” coin. The original mintage of the 1892 gold half eagle was a mere 92 examples, but for some reason, we find this coin is much rarer than other issues with a quarter of that original mintage! Both Jeff Garret and Ron Guth also have come to the conclusion that only 20 to 30 examples remain in all grades. This is the kind of coin that could have traced it’s history back to such legacy collections the Garrett family, the estate of Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., the John Jay Pittman collection, Nathan Kaufman’s holdings and of course, the fabulous proof gold collection of Ed Trompeter. Even the the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institution and the American Numismatic Society each have a specimen of the 1892 $5 half eagle.

The appearance of this coin is just as remarkable as it’s relevance. We note frosty devices come alive against the deeply reflective fields, creating a dramatic gold-on-black cameo effect when the coin is tilted in the light.

The PCGS Price Guide for a non-cameo (and non Deep Cameo) both of which always carry an additional premium, is $22,500 as is Coin Values Trends. PCGS has seen a total of only 7 coins in all grades Proof.
