As the need for some standard form of currency grew within the burgeoning San Francisco community, several jewelers began to create smaller denomination gold coins, including the 25C quarter dollar, 50C half dollar and $1 dollar piece. Better than trying to figure out the multitude forms of currency coming into port from all parts of the world and even better than the thick digits of the bartender using a pinch of dust for your beer or whisky!
These jewelers included Frontier, Deviercy company, the Joseph Brothers, M. Deriberpie and Antoine Louis Nouizillet. They all issued small denomination California gold coins from 1852 to 1858. Antoine Louis Nouizillet was first listedin partnership with Isodore Routhier in the September 8, 1852 San Francisco city directory. Three months later, however, in the December 1852 directory, Nouizillet is shown as Nouizillet Co., jewelers and Routhier is listed separately.
