Produced by Antoine Louis Nouizillet in both octagonal and round undated gold 1/4 dollar format. Total PCGS population graded to-date is 88 coins with 24 in this grade of MS63 with 6 finer.

Ex. Lot 169 from the April 2013 Holabird/Kagin Americana auction sale of the Jack Totheroh collection where it realized $1,116 (18% above the then PCGS published price guide of $950) and was described as:

1855 round ¼ Dollar, BG-227, Rarity 6, “Die State II” (Jack Totheroh designation, two cracks from bow to 8, portrait fresh). Prooflike; highly lustrous with reflective fields and frosty devices. Obv:10 stars; 4th star near rim and away from middle of coronet, 7th star near lower loop of bun.  No broken nose. 9 coronet beads. On B.G. die state III the 1st, 4th, and 10th stars are repunched and the 4 top coronet beads are blurred.

Rev: 1-4 DOLLAR 1855 inside wreath. 4 pairs of berries on each branch; a berry touches the top of the D in DOLLAR and there is a berry to the bottom right of the R.
