BG- 531 Liberty Octagonal, $1 Dollar Gold 1853-N, PCGS MS63 Rarity-4. Created by Antoine Louis Nouizillet, who seemed to be a prolific coiner between 1852 and 1858. We know these coins circulated within the San Francisco region since two were recovered by divers off of the wreck of the S.S. Winfield Scott. PCGS has certified 6 coins in this grade with none finer. NGC has recognized a sole 64 grade who one and only auction appearance occurred in 2009 and brought $3,335. Jay Roe’s was an AU58; Totheroh owned a MS62. Most known examples are in AU condition.
Obv: 13 stars divided 6 – 1 – 6; 7th star above the point where the diadem meets the top of the hair.
