Product Description

1839-C $2 1/2 Classic Head PCGS XF40 CAC. Breen-6150, Variety-22, R.4. Intense mint luster remains on each side of this near-Mint State 1839-C quarter eagle, one that shows excellent eye appeal. The yellow-gold surfaces deepen to amber near the obverse stars, and the few ticks and scrapes visible are not overly distracting. This issue is the second of two dates in the design type with an obverse mintmark; the first three branch mints opened in 1838 but with the advent of Gobrecht’s Liberty Head design type in 1840, the mintmarks were removed to the reverse and remained there through the demise of the denomination in 1929.

Obverse 15. Mintmark over 83. The mintmark is nearly centered over the 8 and 3, farther left than on Obverse 15. The 3 is boldly repunched and the 9 also shows evidence of repunching. The recut star 6 points to the curl below the headband. Star 3 is also recut.
Reverse I. This die is reused after its use at Charlotte in 1838.
Common. The Heritage survey reviewed 111 examples of the 1839-C quarter eagles, including 75 appearances of this variety.
